Definitions
"Proofreading"
is the checking and correction of text work prior to publication in order
to ensure that everything that was required by the copy editor has been
included in the typeset.
"Copy
Editing" is the checking and correction of text prior to typesetting, but
post-copy writing. This entails correcting grammatical, typographic, and
context errors as well as implementing house styles and any other instructions
from the chief editor of the work.
"Copy
Writing" is the generation of original text work following the client's
brief. Copy may then be subject to editing by a third party.
"Indexing"
is finding the defining subjects of a piece of work and placing them in
alphabetical order with their relevant page references.
A
"website" is a data file posted on a server which is accessible to Grammourpuss
or
whose data has been independently delivered, digitally or otherwise, the
final objective of which is to be be posted on the Internet regardless
of public or private admission thereafter.
A
"job" is a homogeneous work provided to Grammourpuss by a client with discernible
boundaries. In standard text work this entails any preliminary text (contents,
quarter titles, etc), main text, bibliography, index, appendix, etc. A
website for one client's client with a title page and a series of interconnected
(via hyperlink) pages will be considered a job for these purposes.
The
"client" is the individual, organisation or body that provides work to
Grammourpuss to have it proofread, copy edited or copy written. Clients
in turn will have clients of their own, but the responsibility to this
second generation of client to Grammourpuss's client lies with the latter.
"Work
testing" is checking that hyperlinks and targets are correctly programmed,
and that graphics and layout, pop-up windows and any other aspects of website
design function in their proper manner. |

Grammourpuss Proofreading Services consider the accurate and rapid completion
of work as our first priority, and, as a small business, we rely heavily
on the continued supply of work that our clients provide. For this reason
the clients can be assured that the optimum effort is made to keep the
work output to the highest quality, by the utilisation of appropriate technology
and by keeping abreast of changes in standards of written English language
and maintenance of these high standards in any of our hired employment.

However, owing to the nature of the work, particularly in work of foreign
language(s) or in text of a scientific or technical nature, it is important
to point out that no matter how diligently we carry out our work there
is a level of inevitability that occasional oversights on our part might
result. A small amount of oversight could also conceivably result in errors
passing our scrutinisation that are contained within the global theme of
"standard English": a large amount is clearly unacceptable and would not
be in our interest in the long term, and as such is our guarantee to the
client of quality. Should the quality of work fall below what could be
considered a reasonable level, assuming the quality of the work provided
to
Grammourpuss is reasonable, the charge for this job will be waivered. We
cannot take any responsibility, however, for any losses incurred
by the client.

Hourly rates are based on timing made by the reader/writer at Grammourpuss.
Again, it is not in our interest to overcharge as our reliance on multiple
orders from a small number of clients would not benefit from such a strategy.

The standard rates are negotiable for any size of job, but negotiations
on smaller orders might not be successful owing to the amount of non-reading,
and therefore non-chargeable work that accompanies every job.

We cannot be held responsible for errors made in proofreading when the
original copy was incorrect (grammatically or factually), although we have
a policy of always querying such events with the appropriate party.
This also applies to damaged, smudged or otherwise illegible copy being
provided.

Any work done between midnight of the first day of the month (i.e. 1 hour
before 1a.m. on the 1st calendar day) and the same of the following month
will be put on an itemised invoice and posted via Royal Mail to the client.
We appreciate payment before the 28th day of the following month, by cheque,
sent via an appropriate delivery service with recording if necessary.

The resolution of any disputes arising from eventualities covered in paragraph
2 above shall be attempted in person, but failure of this channel may result
in legal action should either the client or Grammourpuss fail to pay or
submit work of a clearly substandard nature, respectively.

Hourly rates are rounded up to the next 15 minute increment and charged
thus. Minimum charges apply to entire homogeneous jobs and not individual
submissions thereof.
9.
Any negotiated hourly rate or flat rate must be confirmed in writing. Where
the job is urgent and an exchange of signatures would not be possible prior
to completion of the work, an e-mail will suffice until signatures are
swapped. Such measures may prove unneccesary once a rapport or business
relationship has been established.
To
summarise: Grammourpuss Proofreading Services will do our utmost to
ensure that our output is of the highest quality. This is obviously in
our interest as a long term strategy. However, as in any industry, small
errors cannot be completely eliminated. We stongly urge our clients to
have the final look through their output before publication as the responsibility
to their clients cannot be borne by Grammourpuss. |
